The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are above average. The audio is clear and well balanced, and I didn't notice any background noises. The video is presented in anamorphic widescreen, and is where the problems come in. The picture is clear, but it's also plagued by shadows which interfered with almost every scene for me.

Menus: The main menu is fairly simple but fun and blends a few stills with a little animation. The chapter menu is surprisingly generic, and just lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and a chapter number that doesn't correspond to the chapter numbers in the movie.

The Feature

This is a decent scene that just can't keep up with some of its other competition in the movie.

Nurses is a good and fun fuck flick that's bogged down by expectations. In fact, it's a movie that I think is going to have a hard time meeting most anybody's expectations, although some of the complaints are justified. Digital Playground has a fantastic stable of contract girls, and Robby D. has been a very good and reliable director for them. Throwing them all together with a fun fantasy premise shared by roughly 168% of the planet on a 2-DVD set should make this a monster movie filled with top of the line sex. Nurses is a movie with enough going for it that it should be unstoppable.

For their part, the cast does a fantastic job. The story is light and fun, and it only gets better with how much fun everybody looks like they're having. When it comes to the sex the Digital Playground girls put out plenty of energy and have great chemistry with a top notch lineup of male talent, and they are well joined by other top notch girls like Shyla Stylez and Jenna Haze. There's plenty of anal sex throughout the movie with Katsuni and Stoya joining Jenna and Shyla in putting out the ass extremely well, while Jesse Jane and Riley Steele turn out a fantastic threesome with Manuel Ferrara. The cast of Nurses does a great job from start to finish.

Although the cast might do a great job, the movie has enough working against it from behind the camera that the scenes rarely seem as hot as they should be. The editing is so choppy that in some places I found myself barely caring about the scenes, most notably where Tony T. and Mr. Pete are taking turns pummeling Sasha Grey's always willing ass. The lighting is also average at best, which leaves shadows to plague virtually every sex scene. I don't think there's a single scene were I didn't have multiple shadows interfere with the action at some point, and if there was I'm pretty sure it was near the end where I'm not sure I'd notice due to giving up on hopes for a decently lit scene. Every now and then Robby D. can get a little simple in some of his methods behind the camera for my tastes, but I've never seen it hold back the sex as it does here. Part of what makes it stand out so much is that the plot (if one wants to call it that, as Nurses works with the 'light feature' framework that's been popping up recently in Digital Playground's releases), set, and all of the other little details that stand out so much in a major release like this show a lot of care and effort. The editing and lighting of Nurses really hold the movie back.

The other problem with Nurses is one of expectations. This is a 2-DVD release, and as such I don't think I'm alone in expecting something big here. Yes, there are eight scenes in the movie, but it also only lasts three and a quarter hours. Throw in the behind the scenes featurette and you're not up to an hour and a half yet. There's no commentary track or anything else that's special in the extras which makes this a release that's three and a half hours of footage. Yes, it's in anamorphic widescreen with Digital Playground thankfully remaining committed to presenting their movies with as much care as possible, but I've seen other companies release three and a half hours of anamorphic footage that look just as good as this on a single DVD. When one factors in how choppy the editing in the movie is I couldn't help but wish that the movie was lengthened so that it ran closer to four hours with smooth flowing scenes instead of three and a quarter hours with whiplash inducing editing since there was more than enough room to handle it on each DVD.

In the end, Nurses is a movie that ends up being fun and hot as well as a bit disappointing. The movie is fun and there's plenty of passionate sex. Unfortunately there's also a ton of shadows, editing that feels like it was handled by a blind monkey with a chainsaw, and enough space left on the each DVD that it never seems like it should have happened. There's still a great cast here having a lot of fun, and although its faults might not make Nurses worth the big bucks, there's no denying that it's worth a rental.

The Extra Stuff

The photo gallery can be viewed either manually or as a slide show lasting a little under four minutes with about six seconds per very nice looking snapshot or full screen photo. Trailers are included for Pirates 2, Island Fever 4, Deeper 10, Cheerleaders, Katsuni: Video Nasty, Babysitters, Pirates, and Jack?s Teen America: Mission 18. There's also a behind the scenes featurette, weblinks, and cumshot recaps.

The behind the scenes featurette lasts about twelve and a quarter minutes. Along with a few quick shots around the set, Jesse, Stoya, and Shay have a few words with the camera hanging out. You also get slut races between Jesse and Stoya as well as a few words from most of the rest of the cast between shoots. Naturally there's plenty of eye candy, a few added effects, and some decent humor through the rest of the featurette. This is an okay featurette, but with the size and scope of this movie I can't help but be a little disappointed by this small and generic of a behind the scenes featurette.

Currently, many of Digital Playground?s releases can be found online for between about $18 and $28 with a few stores offering them for under $20. This is a good price for what you get here. The movie's good but not great, and is held back by a lot of shadows and choppy editing. The technical aspects are good but not great and although there is a little effort put into the extras it doesn't seem like too much. This is a good release that has trouble meeting its expectations.

Note to Digital Playground: It's great you want to put out larger, 2-DVD releases, but please pay a little attention to what some of your competition is doing for 2-DVD releases so ones like this don't seem to lack.
