The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are extremely well done. The audio is fantastic. Its clear and well balanced, and I dont think I heard a single background noise. Youre also given the option to listen to the music only or the dialogue only. The video is slightly weaker. Its presented in the non-anamorphic widescreen format and is very well lit, but it has a touch of grain. I think it might be there on purpose, as it has a very film-like feel to it. Its enough grain to be noticeable, however, and did interfere a little for me.

Music: The music is very well done. Its normally very well balanced with the rest of the audio and has a bit of a harder feel. It definitely helps out the rest of the movie.

Menus: The main menu is very nicely animated, and definitely gives a very good first impression. The chapter menu is a bit generic, and lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and a chapter number.

The Feature

After being blind for several years, Kaylani Lei receives a cornea transplant to allow her to see again. Shortly after the bandages come off, she starts seeing things. The letters on the eye chart rearrange to spell out HELP ME, and she starts having visions. Kaylani decides to start investigating who the donor of her corneas was, and finds herself drawn into the world of adult films.

Scene 1 - Lauren Phoenix and Talon

Nurse Lauren and Doctor Talon get it on in the janitors closet in the first scene. After kissing, Lauren drops down to take Talon into her throat. Scene 2 - Kaylani Lei and Brad Armstrong

After Brad brings Kaylani home, she decides to thank him the best way she can for sticking with her through the five years she didnt have her sight. They kiss passionately and grope each other while Kaylani sits on Brads lap before she slides down to suck and stroke his cock. Its been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If thats true, then the makers of The Eye (on which Eye of the Beholder is based) should be very flattered by the job Wicked has done here. There arent many times when adult movies are done well enough to make me want to watch the movie they took their premise from, but not even halfway through Eye of the Beholder thats just what I wanted to do (as soon as I finished watching the movie, of course). Kaylani does a great job in the leading role both with her clothes on and off, and her supporting cast does just as well. Brad Armstrong does a fantastic job as well, and pulls triple duty as director, actor, and writer. I was completely drawn into the job they did here, and was every bit as pleased with the feature portions of the movie as I was the sexual parts. The movie develops nicely and the sex fits into it very well rather than feeling like it needed a shoehorn to be fit in. Eye of the Beholder is an extremely well made adult movie thats definitely worth checking out.

The Extra Stuff

Wicked has put plenty of effort into their extras here. The only options on the first disc are audio options. You can choose between the standard audio track, a music only audio track, a dialogue only audio track, and a commentary featuring Brad Armstrong and Kaylani Lei. The commentary is okay. Brad and Kaylani sounds like they were having fun, but theres a lot of dead air. They talk about the performers, the sex, and plenty of little details about the movie. Its an okay commentary, but the dead air holds it back a little.

The second DVD holds the remainder of the extras. The DVD says that theres 103 min. of featurettes, and that time doesnt come close to covering the entire DVD. As usual, you have promotional materials, DVD-ROM content, company information, and phone sex crap. Theres also trailers for Eye of the Beholder, Space Nuts, Road Trixxx, Beautiful, Killer Sex and Suicide Blondes, and Fluff and Fold. Star stats are included for Kaylani Lei, Jessica Drake, Lezley Zen, and Charmane which includes a few shots of the star, a list of their Wicked credits, and a link to their scene. There are also several featurettes, interviews, photo galleries, and bonus scenes.

Several photo galleries are included. The main feature photo gallery lasts about four and a half minutes while the behind the scenes gallery lasts about two and a quarter minutes. There are also star galleries which run about two minutes for Ava Vincent, Charmane, Jessica Drake, Kaylani Lei, Lauren Phoenix, Lezley Zen, Monica Sweetheart, and Taylor Rain. For each good looking full screen photo or snapshot you get roughly seven seconds.

All Access: The Making of Eye of the Beholder lasts nearly thirty five minutes and features camera work by Slammy and David Crawford. As usual, the cast is nicely identified as they take the screen. Brad Armstrong narrates much of the featurette, talking about what theyre about to shoot and sometimes a little about how theyre going to do it. Theres also plenty of comments from the cast throughout the featurette, as well as fun on the set. As usual with Wicked, its a very well done behind the scenes featurette. It gives you a feeling that you get to see a little of everything that happened around the shoot rather than just concentrating on a couple people or showing the sex bring shot. This is a very good featurette.

The boxcover shoot with Kaylani lasts about five and a quarter minutes. After a quick word from Kaylani, she strikes a few poses as the cameras snap as she sees just how beautiful she can look (and with Kaylanis looks, it cant be that hard!). Its a nice little featurette if youre a Kaylani fan, and even if youre not its hard to not admire her beauty and spirit.

The Girls of Eyes of the Beholder featurette lasts about seventeen and a half minutes and features Charmane, Jessica Drake, Kaylani Lei, Lezley Zen, Monica Sweetheart, Taylor Rain, and Lauren Phoenix. Its almost entirely the girls posing for their photo shoots with a musical background. Theres a little fun thrown in with Jessica and Brad, but thats about it. This is a nice eye candy scene. My only complaint is that the entire featurette is one big chapter rather than breaking it apart and giving each girl their own chapter.

The Behind the Scenes Sex Reel lasts about eight and a half minutes. After a couple minutes of Charmanes masturbation sequence, it moves to Evan Stone and Taylor Rain working on themselves manually. They move through a little fucking before moving on with Kaylani and Brad. Its a different featurette, and basically shows the crew filming the cast with a little soft background music making up most of the audio. Its a decent little featurette.

The outtakes reel lasts nearly five minutes. Theres plenty of flubbed lines, things going wrong, and crack-ups. Its a decent outtake reel, and perhaps the biggest surprise is that you dont have any Evan Stone ad-libs on it.

Kaylanis Moulding featurette lasts about four and a half minutes. Yes, this is another featurette for a Wicked girl getting her naughty bits molded for sex toys. Its a much simpler featurette than many of the others, just because Kaylani only gets her pussy molded. Its a nice little featurette that lets you see plenty of Kaylanis wonderful personality. Its nothing special, but Kaylani makes it fun.

The music video lasts almost two minutes and features Kaylani Lei and Charmane. This is the big version of the lead-in to Charmanes masturbation scene on the gurney. Its a great little video, and definitely worth checking out if you enjoyed the sequence in the movie.

Since Evan Stone is on set, you also get two and a half minutes of How To... with Evan. He covers the thought of anybody can do porn. More to the point, he covers staying hard when the girls arent around and what happens if you get your lines wrong. As usual, its an amusing little featurette, and well worth checking out.

Interviews lasting almost twenty minutes are included with Daniel Leslie Metcalf interviewing Brad Armstrong and Kaylani Lei. Daniel talks to them about the plot of the movie and their favorite scenes. They also talk about some of the effects and little details. They even talk about some of the challenges making the movie and Brads perfectionist tendencies. Its a very nice pair of interviews, and its edited together extremely well. This is a very nice look back at the movie, as well as at Brad and Kaylani.

Theres even an Easter Egg or two. The only one I found, and I wasnt really trying to find them, lasted about two and a half minutes. In it, Brad Armstrong shows a few Rorschach drawings and analyzes them. Its a fun little sequence, but nothing to bust your balls trying to find.

Bonus Scene 1 - Kaylani Lei and Steven St. Croix

The first bonus scene comes from Beautiful. Kaylani gets it on with woodsman Steven next, starting with a nicely energetic hummer complete with some great eyes. Steven returns the favor with some nice oral attention for each of Kaylanis holes before fucking her missionary style. Kaylani also lets him take her from behind before finishing things up nicely.

This is a hot scene. Kaylani and Steven have very nice chemistry, and both put in some nice energy. Currently, many of Wickeds DVDs can be found online for between $15 and $30 with many stores offering them for around $21. This ones well worth the money. The movie is extremely well done, both sexually and artistically. The technical aspects are pretty good, but the video has a little grain. Finally, theres some very nice effort put into the extras. This is a very well put together DVD set.

Note to Wicked: With movies this big, if youre going to use the widescreen format, please go for the anamorphic format and give it the support it deserves. I was really close to giving this one a 5 for an overall rating, and debated quite a bit back and forth. The non-anamorphic video easily made the decision for the lower rating. Also, please put some more chapter breaks in! Its awfully hard to find somebody who thinks there are too many chapter breaks in movies and featurettes, and everybody seems to like a minimum of one chapter for the foreplay, one for the fucking, one for the pop, and one for the plot.
