The Short Story

Initial Expectations: Ive heard a lot about Robby D., but I dont think Ive seen anything from him. Im going into this one curious and hopeful.

Initial Reaction: It has potential, but doesnt make full use of it.

Who Should Watch It : Anybody whos nearsighted

Who Should Avoid It: Anybody wanting a variety of sex and distance shots of the performers

The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The technical aspects are pretty nicely done. The audio is clear and well balanced, and I didnt notice any background noises. The video didnt work as well for me, partially because its presented in non-anamorphic widescreen. It was shot on video but treated with filters to give it a soft feeling that made things a bit blurry. On the plus side, its even throughout the movie and nicely lit.

Music: The music has a porno dance feel thats stereotypical yet cool. Its normally on the loud side, and even becomes the only audio for some scenes. Sometimes it even interferes with the scenes because of it.

Disc Complaints: Theres no time stamp, which is one of the little things that always stands out to me. Quite often I dont have the time to watch a full movie, and I also like to jump back to specific spots in a movie. With a time stamp you can jump to specific instances in a movie and with many players leave a movie to come back to the specific instant you left off. Without the time stamp youre stuck going back to the chapter breaks only. From what I understand it takes almost no effort or cost to include a time stamp, so whenever I come across a DVD without one it always seems a bit cheap to me or like whoever made the DVD didnt really care that much about the people who are buying it. Digital Playground has the resources and technology that this is a problem that shouldnt be!

Menus: The menus are generic and show barely any effort. The main menu is unanimated while the chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each chapter and a chapter number. Theres a ton of chapters, which is very nice, but no effort to actually group them together and let you know whos in the scene thats made up by that group of chapters or anything like that.

The Feature

When Jesse and her man Jason dont hook up the night before, she tries getting a hold of him in the morning. They end up having a Bill Murray moment, with Jesse stuck in the same day. One moment hes taking on his ex-girlfriend while she gets a grudge fuck. Another day they meet and storm off angry at each other and suffer the consequences. Eventually they have to have things work out for them.

Scene 1 - Natalia Wood and Jason Steele

Jason starts things out getting it on with his ex-girlfriend Natalia. They gently play with each other through their clothes while kissing before Jason moves his attention to Natalias nipples. He sucks one while trying to tune in Tokyo on the other before moving down to mouth her mound. Natalia appears to get in the mood for ice cream, as she attacks Jasons softie orally, sucking, licking it, and stroking it in hopes that itll grow enough to become useful. Jason gets it up enough to take care of her missionary style before they play hide the salami doggie style. Finally Natalia takes a nice facial to finish things up.

This is a pretty good scene. Although Jason leaves plenty to be desired, he and Natalia have nice chemistry together. Natalia puts some nice energy into the scene and is one heck of a looker. The camera angles are nicely balanced, and I think the biggest problem with the scene is that the music is too loud and Jason looks to have some wood problems.

Scene 2 - Jesse Jane and Eric Masterson

Jesse takes on Eric in a revenge fuck when she thinks boyfriend Jason is cheating on her. She drops down to attack Eric orally before climbing up to ride him cowgirl style. They move on through missionary and reverse cowgirl before Eric pops on Jesses tits.

This scene didnt do much for me. Jesse and Eric put some nice effort into it, but the camera work killed it for me. It was almost like the camera had no zoom and the cameraman could only stand in one place to capture the action. I dont think I ever saw both the penetration and Jesses face, and for that matter I dont think I saw Eric and Jesses face at the same time. This scene had plenty of potential but wasted it.

Scene 3 - Kenzi Kenner and Eric Masterson

Kenzi and Eric pick things up where they left off the night before next. They head back to the bedroom where Eric tongues Kenzis twat and lets her gobble his knob. They move through spooning, cowgirl, and a little missionary before Eric decorates Kenzis pretty face.

This scene I also had trouble getting into. Eric and Kenzi put in some nice energy and have some decent chemistry, but the lack of audio really held it back for me. It might not have been so bad if the camera showed a few more distance shots, but once again it went with mostly closeups.

Scene 4 - Charlie Lane, Natalia Wood, and Penny

Charlie, Natalia, and Penny get busy on the couch in the penultimate scene. Charlie and Natalia start things out teaming up on Penny. They work her over from above before Natalia goes down to mouth her muff. Charlie gets in the middle of the action as the girls continue to work their way around playing with each other. Things finally finish up with Penny and Charlie kissing while Natalia is under them, and feeling like the scene has plenty to go.

This scene was pretty average, and a bit odd. The biggest thing to me was that Penny never really gave. She seemed to receive the entire time and never got into giving back. She did it well enough that I didnt really notice until the end, but its still something I noticed. The other thing that didnt do much for me here was the ending. To me the sign of a really great director is that they can make a scene end decently without a pop shot. That isnt the case here, and instead it seems like the porno timer went off. This scene is pretty average, but could have been much better.

Scene 5 - Jesse Jane and Jason Steel

Finally, Jesse and Jason get it on when they get back to her place. Jason dives into her pussy with his tongue and fingers before Jesse puts her very nice oral skills to work on him. Jesse lets Jason take her from behind as well as spooning her

Once again Jason leaves much to be desired, and shows that his best place in the sex industry might be as a jiz mopper. Jesse looks to carry him the entire scene, pulling him out to stroke him in spoon, putting extra effort into the oral action, and sucking his fingers. Even the pop at the end looks like it was done with a stunt cock, which to be fair might have just been due to Robbys directing style (but I kind of doubt it). In the end I couldnt help but wonder if the scene was shot with two cameras, one going from the tits up and one going from the navel down because thats all you saw once the sex started. Its not a good way to end the movie, and definitely ended the feature on a low note for me.

Three Timing is an okay movie at best. It has some problems, but I also know that some of the problems I had were due to my tastes. To start with, I didnt care much for the feel and style of the movie. It has a very urban feel with the styles and some of the attitudes, and being a redneck that didnt do much for me. I dont think there was a single character I really cared for in the entire movie, and theres enough plot here that it seems like you should. Wait, I take that back. The Oriental cable guy who dressed up in Jesses underwear and danced around was interesting and amusing, but other than that I really couldnt care less about the people in the movie. Heck, I was happier when bad things were happening to the people in the movie than when good things were happening to them. Due to that attitude, some of the technical things that jumped out at me might have seemed bigger as I was already down on the movie. The biggest thing was the camera work. The widescreen format can show quite a bit more, but here it felt like a limitation. Theres plenty of body parts chopped off and I actually found myself wishing for the full screen format in every scene because I didnt feel that whoever was working the camera was used to working in the widescreen format or even cared for it. The editing also had a MTV style to it, which makes me think that Robby D. can probably make some killer videos. Im sure this type of feel will go over well with a lot of people, but personally the only thing worthwhile I can think of seeing on MTV in the last decade was reruns of Fastlane last year and a disappointing Spider-Man cartoon. I have nothing against artistic porn, but everything here was so focused that I just got clips of what I wanted to see and rarely got to see all of what I wanted to see. Once the fucking started in each scene you rarely got to see all of both performers, and barely even got to see all of one of the performers. I really like to see both the reaction and the penetration, and that was about as easy to come by here as a winning lottery ticket. When the music was put in so loud that I couldnt really hear the performers, I really started to lose interest. Three Timing is a porno with potential that just doesnt come together.

The Extra Stuff

The photo gallery contains roughly twenty very nice looking snapshots and full screen photos which you can watch at your own speed or as an automated gallery. Trailers are included for eleven of Digital Playgrounds movies, as well as their virtual sex line. Bios are included for Jesse Jane and Robby D. which include a photo and some very nice personal information. Theres also a behind the scenes featurette and a lesson in porno.

Porno 101: Episode 8 deals with porno anxiety. Theres plenty of behind the scenes footage as well as a few interviews with the stars. Theres plenty of voiceovers and other little things added in to make it plenty of fun, and most of it is at the expense of Jason Steel. Its amusing, but at roughly twelve minutes its way too long. I think cutting five minutes out of this feature would have made it much stronger.

The behind the scenes featurette lasts fourteen minutes. You get to see plenty of Robby D. working with the cast as well as the cast and crew between some of the takes. Robby D. really comes across well, and I couldnt help but feel that everybody had a good time shooting the movie with the attitude it looks like he brought to the set. This is a nicely done behind the scenes featurette thats fun to watch.

The Bottom Line:

Currently, many Digital Playground DVDs can be found online for between about $12 and $28 with many stores offering them for around $20. Rent this one before you buy it as the movie was okay at best to me. The technical aspects were also pretty average but theres a bit of effort put into the extras.

Note to Digital Playground: First, please take your support of the widescreen format to the anamorphic level. You have a reputation for quality, and if one talks about the widescreen format non-anamorphic and quality dont go together. Second, put a little effort into your menus. Theyre normally what give people their first impression of the movie, and the lackluster job you did here actually lowered my expectations for the movie.
