The Technical Stuff

Audio /Video Quality: The audio is okay. Its nicely balanced, but there are a few places where it doesnt synch. Part of me thought it might be Thomas trying to be a little more artistic because its done almost as a voiceover, but even if he was it just didnt work. The movie was shot on film, so there is a fair amount of grain. Yes, as happens so often with Vivids films the grain does take over the video. Its lit pretty well, and there arent many soft focus problems.

Music: The music is soft in feel as well as balance.

Menus: The menus are okay. The main menu has some nice animation. The chapter menu lets you choose a scene based on a small clip of each scene and a title for the scene.

The Feature

Paul Thomas returns to one of the movies that made him as a director, The Masseuse. Justin plays a lonely guy with a few kinks who decides to go to the massage parlor to get a little attention. There he meets Jenna, and falls for her almost immediately. He tries to grow things a little, but Jenna wants to keep things simple and professional. Unfortunately, Justin is slowly growing obsessed.

Scene 1 - Jenna Jameson and Justin Sterling

When Justin gets nervous, he decides to head to a massage parlor to relax. Hes given Jenna as his masseuse, and after being rubbed down a bit asks her to shave him. She grants his request, and afterwards he asks her for a handjob. She grants his request after he says hell give her a good tip. She also agrees to kiss him, and they kiss passionately as she strokes his cock. Finally, Justin lets go with a small pop on his stomach.

This is an okay scene that both works and doesnt work for me. It moves nice and slow, and theres a fair amount of chemistry in the scene. The chemistry was actually a bit of a problem for me. Although part of me really likes the chemistry between Jenna and Justin, it just doesnt seem right here and actually feels like its hotter than it should be. This is a fairly hot scene that doesnt seem like it should be.

Scene 2 - Jenna Jameson and Justin Sterling

My main problem was how the scene started out and some of the changes. This is a plot driven movie, and things like the pole platform and the massage table magically appearing in the middle of the room were big enough things that it threw me out of the sex somewhat. Thankfully the bedroom scene was passionate enough that I was pulled right back in, and there was no way I could even look away from Jenna and Savanna. This is a hot scene that would have been even better with a few minor tweaks to help the continuity.

Scene 6 - Wendy Divine and Evan Stone

Walking through the warehouse at work, Justin stumbles onto Wendy getting it on with Evan. This scene closes out the sexual portion of the movie extremely well.

I have some very mixed feelings about The Masseuse. There are some aspects which work very well. As always, Paul Thomas has almost a mainstream movie feel, and I can really understand some people liking his style because of it. I like that the scenes are unique and gradually build and also like that theres some nice teasing. Unfortunately, even when theres a full sex scene its so short it has trouble building into something satisfying. Justin and Jenna do a great job throughout the movie, both with their clothes on and off, and at times they do too good of a job sexually. One of my biggest problems with the movie is the chemistry between Justin and Jenna. You can feel the love and passion between them throughout almost the entire movie. Personally, thats great. Im thrilled that Jenna and Justin have found somebody they care about that much and I dont think it happens on-screen nearly enough even with real couples. That chemistry, however, often interfered with the movie. Things are supposed to gradually grow between Justin and Jenna and there are many times when Jenna seems like she should be nervous, standoffish, or a bit too professional. Unfortunately, the chemistry and love between them is too strong and those feelings never really come out. Its much worse with Jenna than with Justin, but it definitely interfered with the movie for me. My other problem with the movie is that its a remake. Ive been looking at Hollywood as a whole and thinking that at least 95% of them must be near braindead with how few new ideas come out. I hate seeing that come through in the adult industry now as well, especially with a movie like The Masseuse. Granted, I like this version better and am far from a fan of the original, but theres enough different ideas here that I think I would have liked it even more done as a more original movie even if it was done as Masseuse 4. Jenna Jameson is The Masseuse shows a lot of technical skill and will probably be well liked by people who dont want all the hot and heavy sex. For me, it was very hit or miss.

The Extra Stuff

Trailers are included for Tera Tera Tera, Night Sticks, Perfection, and Rack em. Multiple angles are also included occasionally. The good news is that you have the choice on whether or not to see an icon when theyre available. The bad news, however, is that they rarely appear to be true alternate angles. Instead the alternate angle appears to be the movie about two or three seconds in the future. For example, you can watch Evan Stone fucking Wendy Divine missionary style in the main angle, flip over to see him fuck her from behind in the alternate angle, and then flip back to the main angle to see him give her a few more pumps missionary style and then start fucking her from behind. For a long time Vivid made the adult industry a laughing stock due to their misuse of alternate angles. For a while they seemed like they were going to use them right, but unfortunately it appears theyve moved back to cheap theatrics rather than doing things right.

Justin Sterling and Jenna Jameson team up to give an audio commentary. Its a very fun commentary, and Justin and Jenna dont leave a lot of dead air. They talk about most anything that comes to mind, from the performers to the sex to their personal life. They even talk quite a bit of things that went wrong with the production, and I couldnt help but be impressed with how well the cast did here with some of the things that went wrong. Theres plenty of laughs and its a commentary thats well worth checking out if youre a fan of Jenna or really enjoyed the movie.

Theres also nine minutes of bloopers and outtakes. There plenty of cracking up on set, a little screwing around, and more than a few flubbed lines. Its a pretty good collection of outtakes, but doesnt add a whole lot to the overall package.

The behind the scenes featurette lasts a little over fifteen minutes. Paul Thomas starts out talking about the original movie and the bondage aspect of the movie. He speaks v e r y s l o w l y t h e e n t i r e t i m e, which brings the interview down a little because it almost seems like Thomas is talking down to the audience. Sir Nik is interviewed next about the S&M aspect of the movie before he ties Jenna up. Theres quick interviews with Justin, Savanna Samson, and the Rottens, as well as a little fun on the set. Its a pretty good behind the scenes featurette, and you get to see plenty of personality from everybody except Wendy Divine and Evan Stone. The lack of Evan Stone just seems wrong, because there always seems to be fun things happening around him. Even then, its a pretty good behind the scenes featurette.

Deleted Scene 1 - Mandy Bright and Frank Gun

Frank starts things out lighting a cigarette while Mandy dances seductively in front of him. She strips down and rolls around the bed before Frank gets out of his chair to admire her up close. He kisses his way from her leg down to her pussy as she fingers her great ass, and then moves back to watch her play with it. Deleted Scene 2 - Rachel Rotten and Rob Rotten

Audio /Video Quality: For a movie thats pushing fifteen, the technical aspects are pretty good. The audio is pretty good. Music: The music is very soft and non-threatening. Its often balanced very well with the rest of the movie, but there are times when it gets a bit loud and covers up the dialogue. Theres quite a few times when it almost gives the movie a Movie of the Week feel.

Menus: Basically, none. All you get is a screen that allows you to control when you start playing the movie.

The Feature

Randy Spears is a meek librarian, as well as a twenty eight year old virgin. He wants to meet women, but just cant muster the courage to ask them even when they throw themselves at him. This is a pretty good final scene. Everything built to this scene, and as such, it works and it doesnt. The internal pop that isnt even shown just seems like a rip off at the end. This is a pretty good scene that had the potential to be a lot better.

The Masseuse is definitely not a movie for everybody. Its very long on the plot and very short on the sex. Out of roughly a ninety minute movie, Im not quite sure if theres thirty minutes that might be sex. Sadly, it isnt a case of quality instead of quantity. Most of the scenes are overblown teases that build on each other. There are some decent teases, but most of it just falls short. Sadly, the plot also falls a bit short. The story moves along slowly, but not always consistently. Theres some odd plot holes, and the movie doesnt seem to know whether it wants to be a love story or a stalker story. I think if Paul Thomas would have committed to one or the other much more the story would have been much better. That said, the acting is extremely good. Both Randy and Hyapatia do a fantastic job in their role, and theres some nice emotion and chemistry between them. They definitely drive the movie, and its easy to see why they got a lot of attention when the movie was released. Whether you like The Masseuse or you hate it, one cant deny the quality of Randy and Hyapatias performances. In the end, The Masseuse is a very well done movie that falls flat sexually.

Currently, many of Club Jennas DVDs can be found online for between about $17 and $26, with only a few stores offering them at the low end. At the low end, this ones probably worth it. The movie is well done, but heavy on the plot and low on the sex. The technical aspects are a little weak due to being shot on film, but theres some good effort put into the extras.

Note to Vivid / Club Jenna: Including the original Masseuse as an extra was a great idea here. I really wish you would have brought back Randy for at least a cameo here. If youre going to do alternate angles, please make them true multiple angles. Youve done enough damage with this style already. Also, please dump the forced commercials at the start of the DVDs. Including them is fine, but not allowing people to skip past them is not.
